If you have played, coached, or been a part of this game in any of the preceding years and are not hearing from us on a regular basis, please contact us to make sure we have a correct address for you.

The alumni Association was formed on Friday, August 8, 1980, the eve of the 27th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game.  The Alumni Association was formed to:

    1. Serve as Area Chairman for advertising and ticket sales in communities where there are no active Shriners or assist Shriners who work in these areas. 

    2.  Participate on Game Day as ticket takers, ticket sellers, ushers or on stadium security.

    3.  Help with promotion of the game through distribution of posters and through contact with the media.

    4.  Help with the Shrine Bowl Golf Tournament held the week before the football game.

It was also voted that dues should be collected in order to help defray expenses such as mailing.  The amount of dues was set at $2.00 per year.  This was later changed and is still $3.00 per year.

As a former participant with an understanding of what the game means, if you would like to help in any of these areas or have other thoughts, we urge you to contact us.

Remember that every year we are requesting the 10th, 25th,  40th,  and 50th game participants to join us for the parade at 12 Noon and to be introduced at the game half-time . August of 2008 will be the years of 1958, 1968, 1983 and 1998.  Make plans now to join the players of 2008 in putting a smile on a child.

Dear Shrine Game Alumnus:

I wanted to reach out to you regarding this year’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl football game, which is now two months away.  This letter will provide details on the game and some important items for alumni.

            The 2008 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game will be held on Saturday, August 2.  This year, the game will be played at Dartmouth’s Memorial Field. Here’s some additional information regarding the 55th edition of the game:

• The game will kick off at 2:30 pm, with the parade starting at 12:00 noon.
• We will have a tent for alumni at the game which will be adjacent to the field. As always, I encourage you to stop by.  This is a good opportunity to meet with other former game participants.
• This year will mark the 50^th anniversary of the 1958 Shrine game, the 40^th anniversary of the 1968 Shrine Game, the 25^th anniversary of the 1983 game and the 10^th anniversary of the 1998 Shrine Game.  We will honor alumni from all of these games by announcing the names of those present at halftime and inviting any former players or coaches from those years to march in the parade preceding the game.

            I hope each of you has a chance to attend this year’s game.  Enclosed please find a reply envelope which can be used to purchase tickets for the game.

      We are seeking volunteers for the Alumni activities associated with this year’s game, including the 50/50 raffle held on game day.  If you would like help with this or get more involved in the Alumni association in any way, feel free to contact me by phone at 617-261-2052 or email at rjw@wvcapital.com. 

            Our fundraising goal for 2008 is $20,000 and we are currently running ahead of last year’s pace for alumni donations.  Please consider making a donation of $30 or more, although donations of any amount will be gladly accepted.  As I have mentioned in prior correspondence, as our alumni base has grown, we have become a very important part of the game and its cause.  Alumni donations last year were a significant portion of total proceeds raised by the game.  Many of you have made contributions in the past and I strongly encourage you to continue to do so now and in the future.  Remember, our donations help support the Shriners hospitals which provide free care to children with burn and orthopedic injuries.

As former participants, we all had the opportunity to contribute to the Shrine game and its great cause.  As alumni, I hope each of you can find a way to continue to help.  I look forward to seeing you all at the game.
